Mindo is recognized as an ideal destination to observe nearly 550 species of birds in the cloud forests, páramos, and valleys that can be visited at any time of the year.

The diversity of climatic floors and the geographical conditions offered by this natural setting make it perfect for sighting. This has led to this parish in the San Miguel de Los Bancos canton, located 80 km northwest of Quito, being designated as the venue for the XII edition of the South American Bird Fair 2023. And preparations are already underway.

The Mindo birding event is scheduled for October next year. The objective of the event is to once again summon hundreds of fans of this practice from all over the world.

Attendees will be able to enjoy a space where they will share field trips, talks, symposiums, workshops and information that will promote bird tourism in Ecuador, a country that ranks number three worldwide with the most bird species observed.

The Ministry of Tourism of Ecuador points out that the 2023 South American Bird Fair in Mindo is a unique opportunity to show all the flora and fauna that Ecuador has, in addition to the wide gastronomy, accompanied by its culture and traditions.

According to Niels Olsen, Minister of Tourism, "Ecuador is the country with the greatest diversity of birds per square kilometer in the world."

Since 1994, a Christmas birds count has been carried out in Mindo. That year, 250 species were observed and recorded. In 2014, 465 types of birds were counted.

Ecuador has 37 endemic species, some 300 regional endemics, 133 hummingbirds, among others.

This northwestern parish of Pichincha is nature, the magnet for hummingbirds, a resting place where tourists come to enjoy the sighting of different species of birds such as the swainson and bearded toucan, twisted manakin, giant gralaria, scaled fruiteater, among others.

Those who enjoy watching birds do it from 06:00 to 10:00. Mindo and its surroundings exceed 550 species that represent a third of the birds in Ecuador and have their habitat in the Mindo - Nambillo Protected Forest Reserve.
